Community Emergency Response Team

  •  The CERT Program educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. All citizens are encouraged to take the CERT training.  There is no requirement to join the active CERT team.  Our philosophy is that a trained citizen is a better-prepared
     citizen.

 June 3 CERT Meeting -

We will host our monthly meeting both in person at the OEM and via ZOOM.  If you attend the meeting at the OEM you will find the chairs are a safe distance apart and we will have hand sanitizer.  We will have individually wrapped snacks for those who come hungry!  If you prefer, we will also host ZOOM Meeting.  You will click on the link, join the meeting online ( using the password CERT ) and you can watch the meeting.  If you join via Zoom, we have disabled your ability to chat or to share your screen.  We have also turned off the use of individual video.  This is all to assure that our Zoom participants are kept safe during the meeting.

Please consider signing up to participate in a new training class being developed for Galveston County CERT members. This is a "Stay at Home" Trauma Care Class and will be taught over the internet on a Zoom platform. The class is June 22nd and 23rd (Monday and Tuesday) from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm each night. This will be great fun! Follow this link to register (only the first 10 teams of 2 members will be able to take this first class offering!)

We will be offering an all day CPR and Advanced First Aid class on Galveston Island in June. The Dates have not been set as of this time, but if you are interested keep visiting the webpage to see when the registration begins!

The Big Ass Crawfish Bash has been cancelled this year! We need to find a way to raise some money for our response needs. If you have ideas please forward them to John at john.herrmann@co.galveston.tx.us

Galveston County CERT will be following County Judge Mark Henry and the County Commissioner's order to stay at home when possible to prevent and slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus and limit exposures. We will be working on methods to provide distance learning opportunities as deemed possible and we ask that our members be prepared to assist their family members and neighbors with preparedness needs within our communities. If CERT is needed to assist in response measures you will be notified and informed on how to register for the response. We ask that our members follow suggested CDC, Federal, State, and Local recommendations so that you can provide for your safety and the safety of your family members and your community.

The MS 150 bike event has been canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The MS 150 group is hoping to put an event together in the fall, so keep an eye on up coming events!

Please follow this link to the CERT Member Skills Set and Training Registry! We need you to update us on your current certifications and skills that you are willing to use during times of need in Galveston County. *The above link has been updated and works properly*

Please look in the Documents folder for new accessible documents that may be of value to you as a CERT Member. We have added a copy of the slide show from the March, April, and May 2019 meeting. We have added ICS documents to the ICS Forms folder that includes a fillable copy of the 201 and the 214 forms. We have also included the list of important phone numbers that you can download and print and place into your response bag. Keep checking back to see new documents that have been added.

If you witness high water or impassable roads in our community, please send the information to Galveston County CERT via our google docs link so that we can share it with the authorities in that area. Here is the link.

If you think you are ready to take the CERT training but want to know more, start here!

Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams", IS-317, is an independent study course that serves as an introduction to CERT for those waiting to complete training or as a refresher for current team members. It has six modules with topics that include an Introduction to CERT, Fire Safety, Hazardous Material and Terrorist Incidents, Disaster Medical Operations, and Search and Rescue. It takes between six and eight hours to complete the course. Those who successfully finish it will receive a certificate of completion.
